The hallways buzzed with students, some loitering and carrying on with their friends, some hurriedly making their way to their next class with their heads down, and Haru walked confidently to his AP Chemistry class with a bounce in his step. People waved to him often as he walked and he waved cheerfully back, winking playfully and shooting finger guns at people indiscriminately. Some people mocked being shot or falling down lovestruck, and they were Harus' favorites.

Most people probably wouldn't be so thrilled to go to AP Chemistry; in fact, the class was in such short demand that he was basically the only person in it. It didn't bother him too much; in fact, as much as he loved socializing, it was a lot easier to focus in a one-on-one class. Chemistry had always fascinated him, ever since he had really started working with his quirk. Most people were content to just have quirks and not understand them, but Haru liked to know how things worked and interacted with each other.

And quite to the contrary of the rest of the student population, he was also pretty fond of Mr. Engelhardt; he could be a bit of a jerk and was known throughout the school for his downright demonic punishments, things so terrible that most people were straight up afraid of him. Things like running 1000 laps and making people memorize the dictionary. He had even heard that he had once melted some poor kids shoes to the floor and forced him to write definitions on the chalkboard until his fingers turned black and blue -- he was sure that one was just a rumor, though. Maybe it was his habit for people watching, or just his intuition about who was good and who wasn't, or maybe he was wrong entirely, but it seemed to him that Mr. Engelhardt cared about his students a lot more than he let on.

He approached the door to the mostly empty classroom early and fished several small seeds out of his back pocket, where he generally kept things like that; in a matter of moments, they bloomed into a small bouquet of lavender and chamomile, which he expertly tied a small, iridescent piece of purplish white ribbon around to gather into a bouquet. He had read these were good for relaxation and inner peace, and often gave them to members of the staff that he liked. Being a teacher had to be a stressful job, after all.

He knocked on the closed door, didn't want to startle anybody too much, before stepping in and shutting it behind him.

"Afternoon, Mr. Engelhardt! I brought you these," he gestured to the small gathering of purple and white flowers in his hand, "For your desk! Or you know, wherever!" He grinned widely, rocking back on his heels a little bit. He wasn't quite worried about sitting down yet; according to his timing, he was still quite a few minutes early.

‚ÄčEither most students didn't like Chemistry, or they didn't like Diether Engelhardt.

The chemistry teacher had a feeling the latter was the more likely reason. Even the strongest alkali was not as caustic as some of his harshest remarks, but he didn't see any reason to mollycoddle the students. The world could be a cruel place sometimes, and the best lessons were often learnt the hard way. Better that they suffer while they were still in the much safer school environment than in the outside world.

Diether did one final check on the apparatus, chemicals and safety equipment required for the lesson today. Everything was in place, thanks to the laboratory assistant who had prepared and set up everything in advance. Now all there was left was to wait. But just as he settled down on his chair, closed his eyes, and propped his feet up on the table, someone knocked on the classroom door. He knew exactly who it was without even looking; AP Chemistry held the dubious honour of being the only class to have only one student this trimester.

Cracking one eye open, he saw his green-haired student approaching with a bouquet of flowers in his hand. Intrigued, he opened his other eye and put his feet down. Lavender and camomile: two flowers with stress-relieving properties, as far as Diether knew. A hint of a smile crept across his lips as he accepted the flowers; if only there were more students who were as thoughtful as Haruo. After all, they were one of the sources of stress for the teachers.

"Thank you, Haruo." Still seated on his swivel chair, he pushed himself lightly towards the cabinet by the side of the room and found a conical flask of a suitable size for the flowers. Filling it with some water, he placed the flowers into the impromptu vase and set it down on the table, a short distance from the experimental setup.

"Take a seat," he beckoned, indicating the chair placed on the opposite side of the teacher's workbench. Given it was a one-on-one class, he didn't see a point in having his only student sit so far away at the students' workbenches.

His trademarked devilish grin heralded a potentially difficult question. "So, Haruo," he began, "what did we cover before the summer break?" The answer Diether was looking for was pretty obvious provided the student recognised the experimental setup and the various chemicals stored in the row of glass bottles on the workbench. "I'd prefer to begin the practical session today with at most a quick refresher."

((OOC: I'm not sure which Chemistry topic you prefer, so please take your pick and we'll continue from there?))

[ ooc: wow im so sorry that this is so late and short, the hurricane and stuff really threw me for a loop, haha. also, I know little to nothing about sciences actually so, like, i probably picked something really easy because wikipedia can only teach me so much tbh. if you want me to edit this at all let me know!! ]

"You're welcome!" Haruo beamed. It might have been wishful thinking, but he could have sworn that he had made Mr. Engelhardt actually smile a little -- a rare occurrence when it was genuine and not a smirk or an evil grin. He considered it a personal accomplishment when it happened; he liked making people smile, especially people that he knew didn't often otherwise.

Haruo sat on the opposite side of the workbench in the slightly uncomfortable metal and plastic chair as he usually did, thoughtfully assessing the careful and delicate setup laid out across the table between them. He didn't think he would get a chance to review what they had gone over before break, and it was a thought that he appreciated even though he didn't quite need it. Unlike most of his friends, he had worked really hard to actually keep up with studying over his absence from school, knowing that when it came to this particular class it would especially pay off in the long run.

"We were talking about the classification of organic compounds, specifically, the different types of functional groups." the tone of his voice was confident, but not overly so -- it was never good to be too cocky.
